Death landlord is fined £5,000

AN 82-year-old Roseland landlord has been fined £5,000 for supplying a faulty electric heater which led to the death of a young mother in a freak accident.

Trading standards officers brought the case against Hilary Thompson from Portscatho, following the electrocution of 33-year-old Thirza Whittall in the village last year.

Maximum fine

Mrs Whittall died just days after she and her husband and young family moved into a house rented from Mrs Thompson.

Cornwall Council trading standards officers said that a £5,000 fine following such loss of life may seem small, but is currently the maximum permitted in such a case.

The tragedy has already prompted calls for changes in the law, which currently says only rented houses in multiple occupancy, such as student bedsits, must have regular electrical safety checks. Properties rented by one tenant are not subject to the same checks.

Following the court case, Mrs Thompson told the West Briton: “This tragedy and its consequences will remain with me always.”
